Sparkhill has long streets of terraces and semis with narrow back gardens. That makes the fence between neighbours important, and it means access and neat joins matter. We plan each job with that in mind and get back to you with a clear way forward.
Narrow back gardens and shared boundaries
In a narrow garden, a fence run is often short but it sits close to the house on both sides. That changes how the work is done. Panels have to be carried through the house or a shared passage, and there may be little room to dig post holes without disturbing a neighbour's path or planting.
We measure the run, check the line against the existing posts and talk about which side the fence will stand on. A good result in a terrace depends on getting the line right at the start. We also tell you how long the work should take, so you can plan around it.
Closeboard or lap panels for a terrace boundary
Closeboard is made of overlapping vertical boards on rails, and it is a solid choice for a boundary that takes knocks from children, balls and bikes. Lap panels are factory-made and go up quickly, which suits a short, level run between two terraced gardens.
Either way we use concrete posts and a gravel board at the base, so the timber stays out of wet soil. Where the ground slopes towards the back of the house, we step the panels so they sit level rather than leaving gaps underneath. Old posts and panels are removed and taken away.
Gates, access and boundary checks in B11
If you want a gate in the back fence for a rear lane or side access, we fit it into the run so the posts and hinges are part of the structure. Before work starts, check who owns each boundary and let your neighbours know. We also work in Small Heath, Sparkbrook, Hall Green and Springfield.
Questions about fencing in Sparkhill
Can you work in a narrow Sparkhill back garden?
Yes. Narrow gardens are common here, and we plan around them. Tell us how we reach the back, whether through the house or a shared passage, and we will work out the safest way to bring the materials in and the old fence out.
Do you remove the old fence?
Yes. We take down the old panels, posts and rails and take them away with us. If any posts are set in concrete that is hard to break out, let us know in advance so we can allow for it.
Who pays for a shared fence?
That depends on who owns the boundary, which your deeds may show. We cannot settle that for you, but it is worth talking to your neighbour before work starts. We can describe the work clearly so you can both agree.
