In Smethwick, terraced and semi-detached streets often have shorter, narrower gardens. That suits a tidy, well planned job. Narrow plots mean we have to think about how panels get through to the back, how close the neighbours are and how to leave a clean line when we have finished.
Narrow gardens and shared boundaries
With narrower gardens, boundary fences are close together and nearly always shared. Before replacing a run, it is sensible to find out who owns it, because that decides who agrees to the work and which side the good face of the panel should look towards. We will go through this with you.
Access can be the biggest factor on a narrow plot. If materials have to come through a passage or the house, we carry panels and posts in by hand and plan the order of work to keep the mess down. Shorter runs go quickly, but the preparation is the same as for a long one.
Posts, gravel boards and panels
A fence is only as good as its posts. We dig out the old ones, set new concrete posts firm and plumb, and keep the spacing even so panels fit without gaps. Gravel boards then run along the bottom so the panel sits clear of wet soil, which is where most old fences start to fail.
For the face of the fence, closeboard or lap panels are both good choices. Lap panels are ready made, quick to fit and well suited to a short Smethwick garden run. Closeboard is built on site, board by board, and gives a more solid, hard wearing finish.
Gates and removal of the old fence
If you need a side gate or a gate to the back, it can be fitted into the new run on a proper gate post, hung square and latched properly. The old fence is taken away with us and the line is left clear and tidy. We cover Smethwick across B66 and B67, and we also work in Oldbury, Bearwood, Handsworth and West Bromwich.
Questions about fencing in Smethwick
Do you work in both B66 and B67?
Yes. We cover Smethwick across B66 and B67. We are based in Stourport-on-Severn, so we arrange a visit first to see the fence, the ground and the access. Contact us with your road and we will get back to you.
Who pays for a shared boundary fence?
That depends on who owns the boundary, which is usually shown in your deeds or agreed with your neighbour. We cannot decide that for you, but we can talk through what is involved and fit the fence once you have agreed it between you.
Can you fit a new fence in a narrow garden?
Yes. Narrower gardens are common in Smethwick and we plan for them. We carry materials by hand if needed, set posts to match the existing line and take the old fence away so the garden is left clear.
