New garden fence in Wolverhampton

In Wolverhampton the old boundary at the bottom of this garden had been leaning and overgrown, with part of the previous fence lying in the undergrowth. One of the photos shows the state it was in before work started.

Closeboard fencing
Details
Old fence removed, Closeboard on concrete posts
Added
January 2025

It was replaced with closeboard panels on concrete posts with a gravel board along the base, running past a garden shed and across the back of the plot. The gravel board keeps the timber up off the soil, which is where fences usually rot first.

Closeboard (feather-edge) fencing uses overlapping vertical boards fixed to rails between concrete posts. It is the most common choice for a private rear garden boundary because it gives full screening and a solid feel.

Frequently asked questions

What is closeboard fencing?

Closeboard, or feather-edge, fencing uses overlapping vertical boards fixed to rails between posts. The overlap gives good screening and a solid finish.

Does a closeboard fence need gravel boards?

We recommend them. A gravel board along the base keeps the boards off the soil, which is where timber usually starts to rot.
