Small Heath Fence Height Rules for Compact Back Gardens

In Small Heath, with its terraces and semis and many compact back gardens, a fence is rarely just a fence. It affects light, privacy and the neighbours on both sides. The usual rule of thumb is up to 2 metres at the back and sides and 1 metre next to a road or footpath. Here is how to apply it in a small space.

Small gardens, big effect

When a garden is short, every extra bit of height is noticeable. A full 2 metre solid fence on the sunny side of a narrow yard can shade a good part of it, and the neighbour's side may feel closed in too. Just because the general rule allows 2 metres does not mean you must use all of it. Many people in terraced streets settle on something a little lower, with trellis on top if they want more privacy.

Remember the rule is general information and we are not giving legal advice. Check with the council if you are close to a limit, particularly if your garden backs onto a path or alley, since that can bring the lower figure of 1 metre into play on that side.

Shared boundaries and who owns what

On a terrace, boundaries are often shared and sometimes the ownership is not obvious. Deeds may show which side is responsible for each fence, though the plans can be vague. Where it is unclear, talk to the neighbour early and agree who is doing what. A fence that goes up without a conversation is the usual starting point for a falling out, even when the height is perfectly within the rule.

Practical points help. Posts should sit on your own side where you can, and panels should face outward so the neighbour sees the finished side. If the old fence is leaning, ask whether it can be replaced as one job. Agreeing a height that suits both gardens is far easier than arguing about it after the panels are fitted.

Fitting tall fences in tight spaces

Access is often the hard part in Small Heath. Where there is no side gate, panels and posts may have to be carried through the house, and concrete mixed in small amounts. Lighter panel sizes and shorter runs make this easier. The job still needs proper depth for the posts, and a taller fence needs firmer footings than a low one.

Check the height of everything that adds to the total, such as a gravel board at the base or trellis along the top. In a tight yard these can push a fence just over the line without anyone noticing. Measure from the ground on your side, include every part, and keep a note of it in case the council or a neighbour asks.

Quick tips

  • You do not have to use the full allowed height, and a slightly lower fence with trellis often lets in more light in a small garden.
  • Talk to your neighbour before replacing a shared fence, and agree the height and who pays in a friendly way.
  • If your garden backs onto a path or alley, check whether the lower limit for footpaths could apply to that side.
  • Measure the whole fence including gravel board and trellis, then write the figure down.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use the full 2 metres in a small garden?

No. The rule of thumb allows up to 2 metres at the back and sides, but in a compact Small Heath yard a full solid fence can shade a good part of the space. Many people choose slightly lower panels with trellis on top for privacy.

My garden backs onto an alley, does that change the limit?

It can. A boundary facing a path or alley may bring in the lower figure of 1 metre for that side. Check with the council if you are close to a limit, since this is general information rather than legal advice.
