What a gravel board does
A gravel board runs along the base of the fence, fixed between the posts, with the fence panel sitting just above it. Its job is to take the wet, dirt and wear that would otherwise hit the lowest fence board. Soil and turf can touch it without causing harm, whereas they would soak into an ordinary board and rot it.
It also lifts the panel clear of the ground. That small gap lets air move underneath and lets water drain away instead of standing. Without it, a panel sitting right on the soil takes in damp from below, and the bottom of the boards turns dark and soft long before the rest of the fence shows any wear. Wood that has stayed dry lasts far longer, which is what the gap is for.
How it helps a busy family garden
In a garden used every day, the base of the fence gets knocked, kicked and sprayed. A gravel board is sturdy enough to take that. When a ball hits it or a mower clips it, you are damaging the cheaper, more replaceable part, rather than the panel above.
It also gives the lawn a definite edge. Grass tends to creep against a fence and push soil up as it grows. With a board in place, the line between lawn and fence is clean, and strimming or trimming along it is far easier. Children, pets and bikes cannot scuff the main panels as easily either. Once children and pets are in the picture, the extra strength at the base is very welcome.
Looking after the edge over time
A gravel board still needs a little care. Keep soil and turf from piling over the top edge, because if they reach the panel above you are back to the original problem. A quick trim with a spade or edging tool every so often keeps a gap of a few centimetres between the grass and the bottom of the fence boards.
If a board does wear out, it can usually be swapped on its own. That is the main point of the idea: the part that suffers is the part that is easy to replace. You rarely need to take down a whole panel for it, which keeps repairs simple and avoids disturbing the rest of the fence. Check it each spring, when mowing starts again, and brush off soil that has gathered.
Quick tips
- Keep a clear gap between soil or turf and the bottom of the fence panel, so the gravel board takes the wear.
- Trim the grass edge along the board with a spade or edging tool regularly, so turf does not creep over it.
- Ask for the gravel board to be fixed between the posts, with the panel sitting clear above the ground.
- If a gravel board is damaged, replace that board alone. There is usually no need to touch the panel above.
