Ernie is based in Stourport-on-Severn and covers WS10 and the surrounding Sandwell area. Send a note with the rough length, what is there now and any gate you need, and we will get back to you to arrange a visit to look at the boundary.
Older streets, later estates
Older houses in the Black Country often have long back gardens with boundaries that have been patched many times over. Posts may be set in uneven ground, and the line itself can wander slightly. We look at what is really there and agree a straight, sensible line with you before we start.
On later estates the gardens are usually more regular, and the main cause of failure is wooden posts rotting at ground level. Replacing those with concrete posts, with closeboard or lap panels between them and a gravel board below, gives a much longer-lasting boundary.
Ground, access and boundary checks
Black Country gardens are not always level. Where the ground slopes, panels can be stepped or the boards cut to follow the fall, and we decide which suits your garden before the posts go in. Access also varies: a side gate or a passage wide enough for a barrow makes things simpler.
Check who owns the boundary before replacing a fence. Deeds or the plan from your purchase sometimes show it. If the neighbour shares it, a chat first helps. We will not move a fence line without you confirming where you want it, so please walk the boundary with us.
Old fence removed, gate fitted
We take out the old fence and remove it from site, including broken posts and loose boards, so the garden is left clear. If you want a gate to the side of the house or at the bottom of the garden, we build it into the new run on firm posts so it stays square. We also work in Tipton, West Bromwich, Darlaston and Walsall.
Questions about fencing in Wednesbury
Can you replace a fence damaged in a storm?
Yes. Storm damage often means broken panels and snapped posts. We look at which parts can stay and which need replacing, and quite often it makes sense to renew the whole run with concrete posts so it stands up better next time.
What is a gravel board for?
A gravel board is a board along the bottom of the fence, usually concrete or treated timber, that keeps the fence panels off the damp soil. It stops them rotting from the bottom and can be swapped separately if it gets damaged.
Do you work on sloping gardens?
Yes. On a slope we either step the panels down in stages or cut the boards to follow the ground. We talk through both with you, because each looks a bit different, and then set the posts to suit the approach you choose.
